Born March 23, 1928, in Ashland, Mississippi, Willie Mitchell studied diligently from an early age to become a professional musician and arranger.

A prominent bandleader, hit instrumental recording artist and prolific producer, Mitchell is credited with creating the now legendary “Hi Sound,” its legacy of hit records, and discovering and directing the creative careers of Hi’s incredible artist roster.

Once a co-owner of Hi Records and founder of the Waylo Records label, Mitchell also owned and operated the world-famous Royal Recording Studio.

A hit instrumental composer, arranger, recording artist and prolific producer, he is credited with creating the famous “Hi” Sound, working with artists such as Al Green, Ann Peebles, OV Wright, Otis Clay and many more
