About WAYout

WAYout supports street and disadvantaged young people in Sierra Leone, changing  the lives of street, vulnerable and conflict affected young people through the arts.

They offer training and shelter, make films that can effect change and record music that enables the excluded to  re-engage, promoting artistic freedom, education and empowerment.

Like many organisations working in Sierra Leone, 2015 was a tough year for WAYout, dealing with the Ebola crisis.

Unlike many youth organisations- they remained open but this meant an increase in numbers coming to WAYout, for somewhere to learn and create and as a safe place offering food and shelter during the lockdowns.

So their costs went up, whilst their income went down.

During the Ebola Crisis 83 young people earned certificates, they opened a new studio and finished five albums, supported other NGOs with videos.

A day of free events to celebrate the universal language of music, Music Day is a connected set of free public events which takes place each year on the 21st June. Last year there were events in 108 countries and 726 cities around the world, not including France where there were too many events to count!

Check out some photos from last years events.

The event is also known as Fête de la Musique(www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr) (orWorld Music Day) and originated in France in 1982. Since then the idea has spread across the globe with each event holding to the same simple set of principles: that the day is held on the mid-summer solstice and that all concerts and events are free and accessible to the public.

Typically this means that the music is brought out onto the streets, though venues are also encouraged to get in on the act!
